Original Hummingbird Painting – The Weight of Air

Some moments in nature seem to exist outside of time.

A hummingbird hovers before a flower, held in place by wings moving too quickly for the eye to follow. It appears almost weightless, suspended between movement and stillness, as though the air itself has become something tangible.

The Weight of Air is an original mixed-media hummingbird painting that explores that delicate balance.

Rather than recreating a literal garden scene, I wanted to capture the feeling of encountering a hummingbird—the sudden flash of colour, the restless energy of its wings, and the brief stillness that occurs when it pauses at a bloom.

Layers of acrylic paint, ink, spray paint, charcoal and oil create a richly textured surface where the hummingbird seems to emerge from the surrounding atmosphere. Some areas remain loose and expressive, while others are carefully developed, allowing realism and abstraction to exist together within the same painting.

The hummingbird is the clear focal point, but the atmosphere surrounding it is equally important.

Soft greens, muted blues, warm creams and earthy marks move through the background, suggesting light, foliage, mist and air without defining a specific place. The flower appears in deep crimson, burgundy and rose tones, creating a strong contrast against the cooler colour of the bird.

Edges dissolve. Marks overlap. Earlier layers remain visible beneath the final oils.

This visible history gives the painting a sense of movement and depth. Instead of placing the bird against a finished background, I allowed it to gradually emerge from the painting process itself.

That approach reflects what I love most about mixed media.

Each material behaves differently. Ink spreads and stains. Spray paint creates softness and atmosphere. Charcoal adds immediacy and movement. Acrylic builds structure, while oil paint brings richness, depth and luminosity to the final surface.

Together, these materials create a painting that changes depending on how closely it is viewed.

From across the room, The Weight of Air reads as a sweeping, atmospheric composition filled with movement and colour. Up close, the viewer can discover broken marks, transparent passages, scraped textures and traces of earlier decisions.

The title speaks to the strange contradiction embodied by a hummingbird.

It is tiny and delicate, yet extraordinarily powerful. It appears to float effortlessly, yet every second of flight requires intense energy. Its body has weight, but in motion it seems almost free from gravity.

The painting also considers the emotional weight carried by things we cannot physically hold—air, light, movement, memory and fleeting moments of beauty.

A hummingbird rarely stays long.

Its appearance is brief, almost dreamlike, and often remembered more as a feeling than as a complete image. The Weight of Air is my attempt to preserve that feeling without removing its sense of mystery.

The painting invites the viewer to pause and consider the invisible forces that surround us.

Air carries the bird.

Light reveals its colour.

Movement gives it life.

For one quiet moment, all three become visible.
